Our Ethos

It is our belief that each experience presented to us outdoors can be harnessed as a learning opportunity. Our students actively engage in the balance of autonomy, self-determination, and empowerment as they learn from their own powerful inquiries. Teachers utilize their roles as scaffolders, offering guidance and assistance while honoring each students’ emergent learning process. Students are challenged to problem solve beyond their current abilities, fostering confidence in their emerging skills and honoring the extraordinary potentials of their hundred languages for learning. Fir & Feather is heart-centered around social and emotional learning which includes supporting students as they practice skills of self regulation, empathy, building relationships, and making responsible decisions.

Hummingbirds

Ages 4-6

In the hummingbird class, nature is at the core of every lesson. Children are encouraged to explore their surroundings at their own pace, engage in imaginative play, and develop independence. Each child is guided through their unique journey by creating an environment that supports hands-on learning, freedom to explore, and opportunities for daring play—critical elements in fostering courage, problem-solving, and resilience. The goal of this class is finding the magic in nature and building a strong foundation for lifelong learning and connection to the earth.

Blue Jays

Ages 7-9

In the blue jays class, your child will be given the tools to explore, understand, and engage with nature in meaningful and impactful ways. Children are encouraged to discover the wonder in their natural environment through hands-on, nature-based learning. Children will explore plant dyes, charcoal, clay, and foraging with mindful guidance. The goal of this class is to develop a sense of stewardship towards our natural environment, and learn about nature’s gifts and her abundance—creating a deeper connection to nature.

Owls

Ages 10-12

In the owl class, your child will stretch their mind and body. This class focuses on meaningful, child-led play that cultivates confidence and essential life skills. The natural environment serves as a dynamic, ever-changing variable where students put to use essential skills they will be learning throughout their time in class such as building shelters, using a knife with safety and care, mindful foraging, meditation techniques, and other bushcraft skills. The goal of this class is a dedication to creating immersive, hands-on educational experiences that allow children the freedom to play, explore, and take responsible risks.

Meet The Teachers

Ms. Nicole

Lead Teacher, Hummingbirds

An avid bookworm and nature lover, I’m a wife, homeschooling mom to four adventurous kiddos, thriving on Waldorf magic! Whole-child education, holistic health and the arts, are at the center of my heart. Currently chasing dreams of homesteading and permaculture while hiking my way through life! “Every child, like every human being, is the constructor of knowledges, competencies, and autonomies” -Reggio Emilia

Ms. Madi

Lead Teacher, Blue Jays

An adventure-obsessed homeschooling mom of two, I’m happiest when hiking and foraging in our beautiful Utah mountains. I have experience teaching in a Waldorf school and as a co-leader for a nature school co-op. I’m passionate about whole child education, wild edible plants and medicinal herbs. I’m a strong believer in the power of nature to heal the heart and calm the mind. Teaching children how to tap into that magic and become good stewards of the natural world around them is at the heart of what I do.

Ms. Morgan

Lead Teacher, Owls

I’m a homeschooling mom of 5 who loves nature, learning, and crafting. I’m passionate about natural health and wellness and personal development. I live on a postage stamp of property but somehow turned it into a very miniature homestead with chickens, goats, and a large garden. I love practicing and honing my primitive skills and survival skills and teaching them to my children and others in my community. I have taught forest school before, where I also blended a lot of mindset training into my curriculum, and I am excited to be able to share my skills and knowledge here at Fir and Feather!.

Ms. Allison

Co-Teacher

I have always felt a deep connection to Mother Nature. The mountains are my happy place and where I feel most at peace. Children are my favorite kind of people! I love to share in their wonder of every day life, noticing the magic all around us. I taught preschool, tutored students, and nannied before becoming a mother. For the past few years, I have been honored to help run a local Waldorf cottage school. My husband and I are living the dream raising our two shining sons. Our family loves exploring outdoors together and cuddling up on the couch for movie nights. We are excited to have even more intentional time outdoors through Fir & Feather!
